Wow, thanks for all the great comments on this song! Some we've received so far:

"That is a true folk response to our plight. Thanks."

"As one who is spiritually connected to southern Lousiana, recent events in the Gulf grate my soul. Thank you Beverly and Seth for getting to the heart of the matter."

How we Play This Song:

Shana is playing the slide guitar tuned in G. Beverly's guitar is capoed on the third fret. So we're playing the song in G minor.

The chord (shapes) are: Em Am and B7 for the verse, and A (major), B7 and Em in the refrain.

It would work too in Am Dm E7, with the refrain starting on D major.

Deepwater Horizon Disaster: lyrics

Come all you good people and listen now to me
I'll tell you of a story that stole my rest from me
I'll sing of Halliburton, Transocean and BP
And how they went to drill for oil at the bottom of the sea

Oil is our addiction, I can see it plain
And death is always hanging round where the needle seeks the vein

The gas came up there was a whoosh and then an awful boom
Eleven men they found right then a fiery ocean tomb
The rig slipped down into the waves, the rest escaped to shore
And Deepwater Horizon went to the ocean floor

Oil is our addiction, I can see it plain
And death is always hanging round where the needle seeks the vein

Impelled by greed the need for speed to cash in on that yield
Before the rig exploded they had tapped that oil field
How many million gallons I guess we'll never know
Are bleeding now into the sea in the Gulf of Mexico

Oil is our addiction, I can see it plain
And death is always hanging round where the needle seeks the vein

Like many other people we all think we'll beat the odds
But money, oil and power are unforgiving gods
What price is the sacrifice? It's too late when we know
It's the ocean life and coastlines of the Gulf of Mexico

Oil is our addiction, I can see it plain
And death is here and hungry where the needle meets the vein

Oil is our addiction, I can see it plain
And death is always hanging round where the needle seeks the vein
